Lakes and Rivers

Oasis for birds and wildlife, (including fish and many other wetland creatures during wet years); exploring our rivers and lakes is a must for anyone visiting our region.

With or without water, they are always spectacular. A dry lake has its own unique beauty and it can be an exhilarating experience to walk across an area where you would expect to find water, and to access areas and sights that you could not see when the lakes are full.
When the lakes are full, a water bird playground suddenly appears. You can also see the small mammals running around, you can rest your eyes and ears through nature.

Camp, enjoy a picnic, explore. The allure of our lakes is always there.

Rainbow Lake
A man-made recreational lake two kilometres south of Rainbow. This beautiful small lake is ideal for swimming, kayaking, relaxing and cooling down from the summer heat. Opened in 2022 the lake offers the first permanent recreational water source near the township. Easily accessed via Rainbow-Dimboola Road, the area surrounding the lake offers plenty of parking and non-powered camping areas, along with toilets and a BBQ/picnic area.

Lake Albacutya

North of Rainbow, identified as a RAMSAR listed wetland of international importance has been dry for many years. A great place to camp, explore in your 4WD, walk and take in our natural world.

Pink Lake
Situated 6km north-west of Dimboola along the Western Highway, the Pink Lake gets its vibrant colour from a salt tolerant alga living in the salt crust. Take the time to pull into the parking area and make the short walk down to the lake’s edge.

Lake Hindmarsh
Although mostly dry, when filled by the Wimmera River after extended wet years Lake Hindmarsh becomes Victoria’s largest freshwater lake. Regardless of the water level, you can enjoy the native flora, spot the wildlife and enjoy the campsites, camp kitchen facilities and amenities at Four Mile Beach.

Nhill Lake
With a permanent water source, Nhill Lake is a must for those who love fishing, skiing and swimming. There is a BBQ area, a boardwalk and a bird hide within a short walk from the main street.

Wimmera River
Originating near the Grampians and snaking its way through to Lake Hindmarsh, the Wimmera River provides a refuge for wildlife habitats. Woodlands of red gum and black box are alive with native species that have disappeared from cleared areas.

The river holds important Cultural significance to the Wotjobaluk people formally recognised when the Wimmera River corridor became the first place in Victoria to be granted native title.

A perfect spot for the photographer, the artist, the bird and flower lover. Murray Cod, Freshwater Catfish, Golden Perch, Redfin, Tench and European Carp inhabit these waters making it a popular fishing location.

For the water-sport lover – water skiing, rowing and swimming areas are found at Jeparit and Dimboola where weirs provide permanent water.
