Waste and Recycling Update
Published on 26 August 2019
Hindmarsh Shire Council is urging residents to continue their recycling habits despite the current waste-recycling dilemma facing Victoria.
Council’s kerbside recycling contract, through Wimmera Mallee Waste, previously resulted in materials being sent to SKM Recycling for processing. Due to the closure of SKM processing sites in Geelong and Coolaroo, this arrangement is now unavailable to Council.
Council has been working closely with its collection and disposal contractor, along with other neighboring councils, to come up with long term solutions to the current regional crisis.
Up until now Council’s waste contractor has been able to stockpile recyclable waste at their local facility, however this facility has reached capacity meaning that recyclables will need to be sent to landfill until a viable financial solution can be found at another recycling facility.
Council encourages residents to continue to view recyclables as a resource and future asset rather than a standard landfill waste, and thanks residents in advance for their household recycling diligence.
Council will continue to provide further updates on this situation as they come to light.
