From Monday 20 to Thursday 23 May 2024, Hindmarsh Shire Council hosted Volunteer Breakfasts in Dimboola, Nhill, Jeparit and Rainbow in appreciation of the tremendous contribution of volunteers across the Shire.

Despite the chilly and early starts, nearly 100 volunteers from across the Shire attended and were warmly acknowledged and thanked by Councillors, the Chief Executive Officer, and Council staff.

Like many rural areas across Australia, Hindmarsh Shire has a rich and diverse array of volunteer organisations and residents who contribute individually or as part of an organisation, without the expectation of reward or acknowledgement. In most cases the reward is the satisfaction of doing something for their community, their neighbour or those in less fortunate situations.

From maintaining gardens and keeping public areas looking beautiful, holding events, and looking after halls, information centres, and other community assets, volunteers are integral to the health of our communities.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Brett Ireland, said, “we are extremely lucky to have so many volunteers in our shire. Figures show that 28 percent of our community volunteer whist the state average is slightly above 13 percent. Council would have little hope in keeping these clubs and groups and other varying tasks going without volunteers, and the breakfasts were just a small way of thanking you for your efforts.”

Hindmarsh Shire Council would like to hear from any volunteer organisation or individual with suggestions on how Council could support and acknowledge them during the 2025 Volunteer Week celebrations.
