Out and About in Hindmarsh Shire
Published on 13 December 2024
There is plenty happening in Hindmarsh Shire this week and the below provides an update on a number of current projects.
ROAD WORKS
Lorquon Netherby Road
Works are well and truly underway with stabilisation contractors recently installing slag-lime to improve the strength of the subgrade, aiming to increase the lifespan of the road. The project includes approximately 1000m of road reconstruction focusing on three segments in the poorest condition. This will repair pavement failure caused by saturated conditions in previous seasons.
Rainbow Nhill Road
Stabilisation patching of small sections of pavement failure is currently underway, scheduled to be completed prior to Christmas.
Nelson Street Footpath
Concrete works have concluded between the post office and SES in Nhill repairing the retaining wall and section of footpath that posed tripping hazards caused by large tree roots.
FUNDING APPLICATION FOR ROAD UPGRADES
Council will submit two applications through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program for the Dimboola-Minyip Road and Lorquon-Netherby Road. Both roads require a significant amount of work, including full reconstruction, following the above average rainfall in 2022.
The total project cost for both roads is $1,439,216, with Council’s contribution being $287,844.
Hindmarsh Shire Council is responsible for a road network of over 3,000kms, with our road network stretching the length from Nhill to Darwin on a map. Hindmarsh has a very small rate base, and with escalating costs on all goods and services grant funding is essential to maintain our road network.
Council continues to advocate for recurrent funding for our road network to ensure our industry can transport their product from paddock to plate and our roads are well maintained.
SIGNAGE AT NHILL LAKE AND JAYPEX PARK
Council has commenced installing Nhill Lake signage around Nhill. The new signage is part of stage one of the Nhill Streetscape Masterplan implementation, which included construction of a path linking the main business district to the lake and solar lighting along the path. Stage two of the Nhill Streetscape Masterplan will commence in the new year, with a path linking Jaypex and Goldsworthy park.
CHRISTMAS GIVING TREES A HUGE SUCCESS
The Christmas Giving Tree initiative for 2024 has been a huge success! Giving Trees located at all four library branches across the Shire have been inundated with gifts to suit all ages.
Chelsea excitedly counted the gift donations on Friday 13 December before delivering them to The Salvation Army. She is ecstatic to report that the communities of Hindmarsh Shire have generously donated 231 gifts - 40 more than last year!
Hindmarsh Shire Libraries and Chelsea wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to each person who has contributed to this amazing cause and aided in making this Christmas a bit merrier for families in need.
