Nhill skate park competition ready take-off!
Published on 23 September 2019
Hindmarsh Shire Council is calling on all skate and scooter fans to participate in the first official competition at the Nhill Skate Park this Thursday 26 September 2019, an event sponsored by FReeZA, Hindmarsh Shire Council and Australian Skate Park League.
The Skate Park League will host the event at Nhill Skate Park for the Western Regional Series part of the VIC League, which is part of the YMCA’s national pathway program that visits skate parks in QLD, SA, TAS, NT, WA & NSW. The event will see skate, scooter and BMX competitions take place at the skate park. With the addition of skateboarding at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the series presents a great opportunity for young skateboard enthusiasts to harness their skill base and progress through a structured national pathway.
The event, which is part of the spring school holiday program organized by Hindmarsh Shire Council, will start at 11:00am with registration and at 11:30am will have its first category Scoot competition, followed by BMX at 12:30pm, ending with a skate comp at 1:30pm. The event will offer a free BBQ for the participants run by the Nhill Lions Club. One of many excited local skate fans Nathan Kennedy, is thrilled about the competition. “I’ve waited so long for this day to come! I can’t wait to be part of the comp. It will be great to have the Skate Park League leading the event” said Nathan. Nathan also helped source one of the many prizes to be presented on the day, arranging for skate and scooter retailer Public Mayhem of Melbourne to donate a brand new Help Scooter which will be won by one lucky competitor.
Located at Jaypex Park, next to the Western Highway the Nhill Skate Park is an attraction for travelers and their children, providing an opportunity for some active recreation and a reason to stop longer in Nhill.
This recreational facility was funded by Hindmarsh Shire Council and Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and it is proving to be a very popular spot for local youth and families and also visitors.
The Nhill Skate Park, which was finished in April this year, features 1.5 metre and 1.8 metre high quarter pipes at each end that are very popular with skaters, scooters and BMX riders, providing an accelerated launch in to the park’s central elements and pump track.
The Nhill round has been brought to life through a partnership between Hindmarsh Shire Council, YMCA VIC, Victorian Skateboarding Association (VSA), BMX Victoria (BMXV), Skate Australia. Other Major sponsors of the VIC League include: Bad Boy Australia, Element, Goliath, Harsh Protective Gear, Skater Maps, Scooter Hut, Root Industries and Rampfest.
