International Day for People with Disability

Despite less than ideal conditions, a resilient crowd of more than 40 people attended Hindmarsh Shire Council’s International Day of People with Disability celebrations at Jaypex Park in Nhill on Tuesday 3 December 2019.
Visitors from Warracknabeal, Dimboola, and Horsham joined Nhill residents who braved the blustery conditions to participate in various activities and despite the weather, the feedback received suggested all who attended had an enjoyable day.
Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr. Rob Gersch, opened proceedings with a welcoming speech, encouraging attendees to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. Cr. Gersch then declared the celebratory event open.
The day began with a dance session led by Janeth Rebarbas, which quickly turned into an impromptu karaoke session thanks to some of the less than shy participants!
Following a BBQ lunch, Horsham artist Nichola Clarke ran a workshop in which participants were able to make decorative Christmas Stars from bamboo, wool and coloured paper. Many participants took home their unique creations to hang on their Christmas tree this year.
The big games were again popular with many attendees, particularly the giant ‘Connect Four’ game, which inspired some friendly competition throughout the day.
International Day for People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability.
