Hindmarsh Shire Council Youth Awards presented at Nhill College
Published on 18 June 2019
Awards to some of Nhill’s outstanding youth were presented by Hindmarsh Shire Councillor, Cr Rob Gersch, at an assembly at Nhill College on Monday 17 June 2019.
The recipients of the awards were nominated for the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Awards that were originally planned to be held earlier in the year.
Unfortunately, the Youth Awards event was not able to proceed, but Hindmarsh Shire Council still believed it was important to acknowledge the young people who were nominated across a range of different categories.
Cr Gersch said, “I am honoured to be here today on behalf of Hindmarsh Shire Council to present Youth Awards to a number of outstanding young people from within our community”.
“It is very pleasing and a great achievement to see so many young proactive and productive people in Nhill and across Hindmarsh Shire” added Cr Gersch.
The following individuals were nominated and received awards.
Mitchell Dahlenburg - Young Sportsperson Category
Mitchell received his Young Sportsperson Award in recognition of his contribution to the Nhill and District Sporting Club, specifically his role in coaching the under 12s football team and his role as the Club’s Junior Vice President.
Ruby James - Young Sportsperson Category
Ruby received a Young Sportsperson Award in recognition of her persistence and perseverance in advancing her involvement in cricket in the Western Waves Cricket Squad and the Renegades Country team.
Jenna Schneider – Young Sportsperson Category
Jenna was recognised for a Young Sportsperson Award for her time umpiring and coaching both Basketball and Netball in Nhill. Jenna has been commended for her knowledge, guidance and support to younger people and shows leadership skills that are outstanding for someone of her age.
Josh Lees - Young Sportsperson Category
Josh is also a recipient for a Young Sportsperson Award and was recognised for his involvement in football and cricket with local teams. Josh always puts his hand up for leadership and volunteer roles in the clubs he is involved with and is an asset to this community.
Sarena Be Nyo - Young Artist Award
Sarena has been awarded a Young Artist Award for her willingness to step out of her comfort zone by taking on the role as the pianist at the local Karen Church services each Sunday.
Zara Clark – Young Artist Award
In addition to being a recipient of a Young Artist Award for her contribution to the 2018 production of JER and various other arts related activities, Zara has also been recognised for being involved with various roles at school, but more specifically for her role in the Well-Being Team.
Alister Dickinson – Youth Volunteer Award
Alister was recognised with a Youth Volunteer Award for his contributions towards the Yanac Hockey Club and Nhill Vintage Machinery Club. Alister’s "Bike Parade Project" raised awareness within the Nhill College community of the fantastic work the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre does.
Through the bike parade, Alister raised a considerable amount of funds for the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre and as a result he was asked to continue as a regular volunteer for the organisation in the future.
Nhill College’s SPARK Program received a Group Youth Community Award for the programs students Drew Schneider, Aiden Rintoule, Tyler Davis, Thomas Harris and Brock Stephens have undertaken at Iona Nursing Home under the guidance of teacher Mrs Carmen Trenery.
The Nhill College SPARK program received two nominations which clearly demonstrates and acknowledges the wonderful work the students and teachers have undertaken at Iona Nursing Home and other contributions they have made within the community.
At the conclusion of the awards ceremony Cr Rob Gersch said “Once again, congratulations to all recipients of Awards today and on behalf of Hindmarsh Shire Council and the broader Nhill community I would like to thank you all for your outstanding efforts in supporting numerous initiatives and organisations. The Nhill community should be very proud of your achievements”.
Funding for the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Awards was made available through the Victorian Government’s Department of Premier and Cabinet, Victorian Youth Week 2019 and Hindmarsh Shire Council.
