Hindmarsh Shire 2024 Youth Council Wrap-up
Published on 16 December 2024
Following a very busy year, the 2024 Hindmarsh Shire Youth Councillors were able to kick back, relax and reflect on what has been an incredible program with a break-up BBQ dinner at the Jeparit Riverbank Precinct on Monday 09 December 2024.
The following list highlights some of the amazing things the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Councillors have achieved throughout 2024:
- Volunteering at the Jeparit Show making and giving out popcorn and having games, face painting and tattoo stickers available.
- Pool Parties were held at each of the Shire's swimming pools last summer with nearly 200 participants. Plans are in place for repeat events this summer at all pools.
- Creating a video on belonging that was screened at the Nhill Memorial Community Centre during Harmony Day celebrations.
- Laying wreaths with our Councillors on ANZAC Day at each of the ANZAC Day services across the shire.
- Participating in the Youth Retreat held over a weekend earlier in the year in Dimboola where new and returning Youth Councillors learnt about teamwork and leadership and started planning for 2024.
- Supporting hugely successful School Holiday Programs across the Shire, with more than 1,200 participants being entertained with various activities and events during the term one, two and three breaks.
- Painting a mural in Nhill shop fronts for the Easter holiday period.
- Running Youth Discos in Dimboola and Rainbow and the Youth ‘Luna Ball’ Formal in Nhill - all were very well attended with more than 260 attending these events throughout the year.
- Recording episodes for the Youth Mental Health Podcast which will be available to listen to in early 2025.
- Creating ‘I SPY’ brochures for Children’s Week - available in all Libraries and Customer Service Centres.
- Supporting Do It for Dolly Day by wearing something blue.
- Attending a dinner with Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria.
- Supporting 16 Days of Activism Community Walks throughout November and December.
Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay said “We are extremely proud of our Youth Councillors’ hard work and dedication in creating a better environment not only for themselves but their peers and their community. They have great compassion for others and have demonstrated their fantastic values across all their activities and functions throughout 2024”.
The 2024 Youth Councillors have not only achieved wonderful things while being on the Youth Council, but they also achieved incredible things as students and members of the community – including being voted as 2025 College Captains, being on the school Student Representative Councils, receiving many awards for their great work in the community and sporting clubs, obtaining part-time employment while at school and so much more.
Hindmarsh Shire Council wish all 2024 Youth Councillors the best for the future and acknowledge the fantastic work that they have achieved throughout the year. We know that they will continue to be the incredible leaders that they have shown themselves to be!
