Hindmarsh Shire Council’s July 2024 School Holiday program will be remembered as one of the most successful since the program was first implemented. Packed with a variety of free and diverse activities to keep young people busy during the school holiday period, there were around 700 attendees across the two weeks.

The school holiday program featured:

  • Crafty Arts with Danelle, where children were able to create their own pinecone animals;
  • A highly successful basketball clinic hosted by Fab Lauricella at the Dimboola Sports Stadium;
  • A very popular roller disco conducted by Pru Cook from the Wimmera Roller Derby League, where beginners and intermediate skaters were able to either learn how to skate or show off their skills;
  • A karaoke and mini disco with DJ that showcased the dancing and singing talents of the young people of the shire;
  • Well-attended kids’ yoga sessions, with some participants stretching muscles they never knew they had; and
  • The two booked out sessions at Tiny Goats and Co that were a highlight for many children and adults who were able to cuddle up to recently born baby goats.

The school holiday program finished with a huge event at Nhill Memorial Community Centre where the movie Despicable Me 4 was screened free of charge for approximately 370 attendees who also enjoyed free water and popcorn.

Hindmarsh Shire Council CEO, Monica Revell said, “It is wonderful that we can offer free activities and programs for our community during the school holidays, especially during the winter break when it is cold. Our school holiday program is growing in popularity due to the broad range of activities offered. Our team has already commenced planning for the September school holidays, so keep an eye out in early September for what has been planned.”

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Brett Ireland said, “The school holiday program attendance just continues to exceed our wildest expectations. This has the effect of giving our staff confidence to engage further top-quality presenters and organise activities for school holidays going forward. I sincerely thank our hardworking team at council who are making the school holiday activities an outstanding success.”

The school holidays program was made available with funding from the Victorian Governments Engage 2022 – 2024 program that enables young people to engage, participate, develop and celebrate their local community.
