Youth Council Presentation Ceremony
Hindmarsh Shire Council formally welcomed 2025 Youth Councillors with a certificate presentation on Friday 28 February 2025 in Dimboola.
After official presentations from Hindmarsh Shire Council CEO Monica Revell and Mayor Cr Ron Ismay, two former Youth Councillors - Marcel Badua and Liam Campbell were welcomed as guest speakers. Marcel and Liam are the 2025 school captains at Dimboola Memorial Secondary College and spoke about the leadership skills they gained in their terms as Youth Councillors and their commitment to making their community a better place for young people.
The Youth Council is traditionally made up of 13 young people from across the Shire. 12 are appointed through an application process, with the 13th being an honorary position for the Youth of the Year award recipient. The Hindmarsh Shire Youth Councillors for 2025 are: Amelia Albrecht, Eliza Clarke, Anora Corbett, Messi Ehdohpaw, Chelsea Elliott, Stanley Foster, Lisa Klee, Georgie McKinnon, Matilda McKinnon, Savior Ner Moo, Ryan Wallace, Lilly Williams, and Bailee White.
Youth Councillor Georgie said she is grateful to be on Youth Council as Hindmarsh is a “caring community that accepts all ideas and people.”
Cr Ismay said, “The future of our rural communities lies in the hands of our youth. By empowering young people through the Youth Council, we are creating opportunities for young people to shape the future of their communities with innovation, passion, and resilience.”
International Women’s Day Jeparit Riverbank Fiesta
Youth Councillors hit the grounds running at the Jeparit Riverbank Fiesta on Saturday 1 March 2025, supporting International Women’s Day by offering the smoothie bike, free popcorn, face painting and giant games.
Youth Councillor, Messi said, “It was great to see the community together enjoying the popcorn and making their own smoothies on the smoothie bike”.
National Young Leaders Day
On Sunday 2 March 2025, five Youth Councillors made their way down to Melbourne for the Halogen National Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). The Youth Councillors got to hear from a high-profile list of Australia role models including Australia’s most successful Olympian of all time – Emma McKeon as well as a Samoan and Australian, Catherine Laga’aia who is starring in Disney’s upcoming live-action film “Moana”. They also heard from Thomas Duncan-Watt, an Australian screen and playwriter and Majak Daw, the first Sudanese Australian Rules Football Player who spoke about his family and migration to Australia due to the civil war in Sudan.
Youth Councillor Lilly stated, “The National Young Leaders Day was very fun and interactive. We also got to sing and dance, which I loved. Everyone was engaging and I took away many lessons from all the speakers, like get out of your comfort zone and try something new”.
After the National Young Leaders Day conference, Youth Councillors had the opportunity to visit Government House. This was a trip highlight as the Governor herself – Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC – spent time with Youth Councillors talking about the history of the Government House. They also were able to sample goods from the Government House garden, including cucamelons, chocolate mint, cherry tomato, chillis and so much more.
There is no doubt Youth Councillors have had a fantastic start to their year and we are excited to see what they achieve throughout the rest of 2025!
