Hindmarsh Shire Council has received funding for pet desexing through the Victorian State Government’s Animal Welfare Grants Program (Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions).

The funding will allow approximately 25 residents of Hindmarsh with eligible concession cards to access subsidised cat desexing procedures at local participating veterinary clinics. In doing so, this will significantly reduce the number of unplanned and unwanted cats who are abandoned or delivered to an animal welfare agency via Council for rehoming or to be euthanized. Also assisting to reduce the impact of roaming cats on native species, encourage responsible pet ownership and relieve the pressure on local rescue groups.

Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr. Melanie Albrecht, said “Council are proud to be able support eligible pet owners through this program. Owning a cat can bring such joy but unplanned kittens can cause significant pressure on families. This program will provide more choice for cat owners.”

Through consultation undertaken in the development of Hindmarsh’s Domestic Animal Management Plan and the Council Plan 2021-2024 and Vision 2040, our community advocated strongly for a desexing subsidisation program. Council also has strong support from local veterinary clinics, environmental groups and animal shelters that are often overwhelmed with abandoned, surrendered or stray cats and kittens.

Eligible community members are encouraged to keep an eye on Council’s Facebook page, newsletters and in local newspapers for further details on the program and how to access the subsidy.
