Hindmarsh Shire Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Brett Ireland recently attended the Australian Local Government Association National General Assembly in Canberra.

The assembly was attended by delegates from nearly 540 Councils from across Australia. Cr Ireland said, “it was a privilege and very humbling to have the opportunity to attend the National General Assembly to consider many local government issues in Canberra recently.”

The assembly covered advocacy issues of importance for Local Government including climate change, nuclear energy, carbon emissions, and increased funding.

Federal Ministers from the recently elected Labor Government were keynote speakers speaking on the importance of collaboration between all levels of government. Other keynote speakers covered topics including the housing crisis (both affordability and availability), the energy crisis, and rate capping and the impacts rate capping has on sustainability.

Cr Ireland said, “During breaks we were able to speak with exhibitors, including market leaders in various council related items”. “Electric vehicles, including light trucks and solar powered mowers, were on display for attendees to view.”

Local Government is responsible for approximately 30% of services delivered, but only receives 3% of taxes. The Australian Local Government Association received strong support from those in attendance to advocate for increased funding for Local Government so they are able to continue to deliver the services our communities deserve.
