Waste and Recycling
Published on 08 October 2021
The State Government plans to introduce a Container Deposit Scheme in 2023, to reduce the volume of recyclables being deposited in kerbside bins and at Transfer Stations. Additional kerbside reforms have also been announced, which includes collection of glass by 2027 and Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) to be rolled out by 2030.
Hindmarsh Shire Council, in conjunction with three neighbouring Councils, is currently working towards a collaborative procurement process for waste, recycling and transportation service contracts to be implemented by 1 July 2022. Council envisage cost savings can be made by collective bargaining.
At the Council meeting held on Wednesday 8 September 2021, Council approved the extension of the current waste and recycling collection contracts with Wimmera Mallee Waste to align with the collaborative procurement process. The transportation of skips to Dooen Landfill from the transfer stations was also extended. This will ensure waste collection services continue without disruption.
Mayor Cr Ron Ismay said “Council appreciates the services Wimmera Mallee Waste has provided in the past and look forward to its ongoing services whilst the kerbside waste and recycling reforms are being introduced”.
