Hindmarsh Shire to Observe Melbourne Cup Day Public Holiday

Published on 10 September 2021

Following the cancellation of the 2021 Agricultural Society Shows in Hindmarsh, Council resolved on Wednesday 9 September to observe the 2021 Melbourne Cup Day public holiday throughout the Shire.

Council initially took the decision to seek approval from the Minister for Small Business for substitute public holidays for the 2021 Melbourne Cup day public holiday in Nhill and Rainbow. This was prior to the recent COVID-19 outbreak which resulted in lockdowns and uncertainty.

Cr Ron Ismay said “It is disappointing for our local volunteers who spend a significant amount of time planning their Agricultural Society shows. With the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in lockdowns and significant restrictions we understand that it was a hard decision but necessary one to cancel their 2021 events especially after having to cancel their 2020 shows also.”

Cr Ismay continued “We hope 2022 brings back our Agricultural Society shows bigger and better after a two year break.”

Council looks forward to being able to assist our Agricultural shows in 2022
