April School Holiday Eggcitement
Published on 19 April 2021
The April school holiday program proved to be a hit across Hindmarsh Shire Libraries. Children from Jeparit, Rainbow and Dimboola experienced STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities covering concepts such as solutes and solvents, simple spinning egg physics, and acid base reactions. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the activities and all of the visually exciting and fizzy rainbow results. We look forward to including more STEM programming into our monthly library program across Hindmarsh Shire Libraries.
We also filled our library space with some furry, slimy and winged creatures courtesy of Wild Action. Both Nhill and Dimboola sessions filled up quickly and due to the number of registrations for the Nhill session it was relocated from the Library to the Nhill Memorial Community Centre. Attendees got to learn about some of our endangered wildlife, endemic to the Wimmera and from across the country. It was like meeting the cast of Wombat Stew with goannas, koalas, snakes and more.
Library staff shared a very special story time on Wednesday night, taking advantage of our extended library hours by getting into their comfiest pair of pajamas for a night time story time session at the Nhill and Dimboola Library. These Pajama Sessions saw children delighted by nursery rhymes, sleepy time books and the chance to see our libraries after dark.
Up up and away went children at the Super Hero Day held at Nhill Memorial Community Centre. Kids learnt how to leap tall buildings in a single bound and land safely while laughing along at the antics of the presenters. It was fantastic to see such a big group of children having fun and moving their bodies.
A session at Nhill library also saw attendees complete botanical screen printing.
Hindmarsh Shire Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay said “We are pleased our school holiday sessions were so well attended by people of all ages. We look forward to planning regular activities in our libraries including book chats, jigsaw puzzle clubs, story time and rhyme time to name a few.”
Cr Ismay continues “I encourage our community to stay up to date with what is happening in their local library as libraries are more than just books on shelves, they are hubs for community members to use.”
Planning has already commenced for the June/July school holidays, with plans to extend all programs across the shire.
