Hindmarsh excited by continued funding for Overland Train Service

Published on 01 July 2020

Hindmarsh Shire Council is very pleased that the Victorian State Government has committed funding for the continuation of the Overland Train Service for a further 3 years.

The Overland Train has been servicing Hindmarsh and other Local Governments for over 133 years and is the only passenger train service available to our community for travel by rail between Melbourne and Adelaide.

Hindmarsh Shire Mayor Cr Rob Gersch said “We are very excited by the announcement of continued funding for this important service. Many of our residents utilise this service to travel to appointments and visit family in both Melbourne and Adelaide.”

He continued “We see opportunity for increased visitors to our Shire now that overseas travel has been ruled out in the immediate future. Hindmarsh has a lot of natural attractions and we will be encouraging people from Melbourne and Adelaide to hop on the train and visit our beautiful part of Victoria.”

Cr Gersch congratulated and thanked all those who have worked hard supporting and advocating to keep the service running. “I would like to particularly thank those community members who have worked tirelessly on this project”.
