Candidate training available for prospective Hindmarsh Councillors

Residents of Hindmarsh Shire interested in standing for Council are required to undertake mandatory candidate training prior to nominating for the upcoming local government elections.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mandatory candidate training will be held online through Local Government Victoria. The mandatory candidate training covers vital information potential candidates need to know about being a councillor, including understanding conflicts of interest, roles and obligations of being a councillor, code of conduct, confidentiality requirements and support available to help undertake the role of councillor.
Hindmarsh Shire Council CEO, Greg Wood said “This year, for the first time, candidates interested in standing for Council are required to undertake mandatory training prior to nominating for Council.” “Training will take about an hour to complete, and serving councillors, past councillors and anyone interested in running for Council must complete the training to stand in the upcoming October 2020 elections.”
Hindmarsh Shire Council’s website contains valuable information for prospective councillors including Council’s budget, annual report, key policies and procedures, and Council meeting minutes.
Mr Wood said, “We encourage prospective councillors to have a look at Council’s website and familiarise themselves with key council documents and policies. One of the tasks for the new Council will be to set a four year Council Plan which describes the strategic objectives of the Council and feeds into Council’s Strategic Resources Plan and Annual Budget.”
