175 Attendees at 16 Days of Activism Community Walks
Published on 04 December 2024
Over the past two weeks, Hindmarsh Shire Council has hosted four community walks and barbeque teas in support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
16 Days of Activism is an international campaign, started by the United Nations in 1991, that aims to bring together organisations and individuals to raise awareness and draw attention to the critical issue of gender-based violence.
Attendees walked through the major streets in Nhill, Dimboola, Rainbow and Jeparit, wearing shades of orange and carrying supportive banners and signs. Then, attendees were welcomed and informed by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors and Ballarat and Grampians Community Legal Service around the campaign and gender-based violence in our community. A barbecue was provided at the conclusion of each of the walks with assistance from community groups (Nhill Fire Brigade, Dimboola Progress Association, Lions Club of Rainbow and Jeparit Town Committee) and enjoyed by over 175 people across these events.
Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay, said “As a community, we must stand together to raise awareness and take action against gender-based violence. It was heartening to see so many come together, walking through our streets, wearing orange, and showing their commitment to a future free from violence.”
Cr Ismay continued “I am proud of the collective efforts of our community, and I think everyone who participated in these walks, as well as the local groups that supported us. Together, we can make a difference.
Hindmarsh Shire Council would like to thank all who attended these events, which were made possible by funding through Safe+Equal and Respect Victoria’s Grassroots Initiative, with support from the Free from Violence Local Government Project.
